Reggae music is one of Jamaica's greatest treasures. Jamaicans have shared this wonderful treasure with the world for more than three generations. Even though it may be controversial at times, because it is sometimes political and address issues that many may have thought about and never talk about, it is however accepted by every nation no matter the race, language, culture or class you just got to love it because Reggae music = love.

Unfortunately often times Reggae music gets confused with its offspring, Dancehall Music which has been accused in more recent times for promotion of violence and lyrics of sexual natures, which we will address in a next article.

As you know, one of the most popular faces for Reggae Music is the late great Robert Nesta Marley who is more popularly known as Bob Marley. Bob Marley face not only represents Reggae Music and Jamaica today, but also represents unity and maybe this is why he was awarded artiste of the century. He used Reggae Music as a weapon of mass unification in his effort to bring world peace and to fight against oppression across the world. With just powerful lyrics of peace and love with a guitar, he still manage to bring back some love to the world which was going through a terrible era of racism and civil wars in places like South Africa and Zimbabwe. Which inspired the hit "Zimbabwe", meanwhile Jamaica in particular was plagued by crime on violence during the 1980 elections.

Throughout this horrific war and  violence between the two political parties in Jamaica’s 1980 elections the world call upon the leaders of both political parties in desperation, to save the beautiful island of paradise which leave them no alternative but to dig for the island's treasure which was taken in Jamaica National Stadium and unveiled by the great icon Bob Marley when he performed one of his great hit song titled " JAMMIN " when he called both party leaders on stage and have them shake hands as a symbol of unity and an example for party followers to follow and once again Reggae music the island's treasure restored the love!

Do You Think Peter Tosh Should Be A National Hero?

Peter Tosh was born Winston Hubert McIntosh on October 9, 1944 in Grange Hill, Jamaica. Raised by his aunt, he left home in his early teens and headed for the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, known as Trench Town. Like many of his fellow young aspiring musicians, he found his way to Joe Higgs, a local musician who offered free music lessons to youth. It was through Joe Higgs that Peter Tosh met his future fellow band mates, Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer which he made a few hits with before he went solo to do hit like "Legalize It"
Niambe Tosh, the daughter of late, great Reggae singer, Peter Tosh thinks that her famous father should be branded a National Hero by the Jamaican Government. This hails as part of the Peter Tosh Estate's campaign to garner full recognition for the Reggae singer's many contributions to Jamaica's music industry, amongst other works.
In an interview with IRIE FM on recently,Niambe Tosh insists that her father deserves such acknowledgement from the local governments. Do you think he deserve to be a National Hero ?

Vybes Kartel Letter From Hell

Vybz Kartel issues letter from behind bars

vybz_kartel_letter_writing.jpgEmbattled Dancehall superstar, Adidja Palmer, more popularly known as Vybz Kartel, has publicly addressed his current legal battles for the first time since his arrest last September.
The prominent deejay, who faces murder, drug and obstruction of justice charges stemming from three separate cases, issued a letter from the Horizon Remand Centre in Spanish Town, where he currently resides while awaiting trial. A part of his letter was published in Sunday's edition of the Jamaica Gleaner by University of the West Indies (UWI)literary and cultural professor, Carolyn Cooper who wrote an editorial piece on Kartel's current situation behind bars.
In the piece, Cooper speaks from a mother's point of view as she distinguishes the difference in personality between Vybz Kartel and Adidja Palmer, claiming that Palmer's a complete contrast of the controversial character that his stage persona presents. Additionally, she speaks of various dissections of Kartel's public perception worldwide and in the media.
In the letter, Kartel speaks to those points and then some; accusing law enforcement officials and the media of labeling him guilty before getting the chance to prove his innocence before the courts.
"As you know I am in jail on numerous charges and I'd like to tell you that I am an innocent man who needs your help because I'm being painted as this evil 'D.J. by day, don by night' murderer who is society's number one cause of crime and violence. The police is using the media to slaughter me and as such I don't think I will get a fair trial. They are using the media to form public opinion of me that is so contradictory to the person that I really am. They (police) have tried my case in the public & found me guilty," the letter reads.
"Every single piece of alleged evidence, every new development in the case is thrown on TV. As if this is a soap opera, but I can assure you that this is no movie to me. This is about my life and my freedom and I take them very seriously."
Additionally, Kartel insisted that he's a far cry from some of his inmates in remand and intimates that these legal troubles have taken a toll on his family.
"My charges are merely allegations, but they are giving the public the impression that I am guilty and that is not fair to me or my family," he said.
"I have been to court on numerous occasions and saw hundreds of accused men who are charged with heinous crimes like murdering children, killing police officers, burning & shooting whole families and I have never once saw police on TV; discussing the development of those cases, much less every week, as in my case."
Vybz Kartel remains in jail despite having copped bail on a marijuana possession charge, as well as in a murder case in which he and other men stand accused of killing St. Catherine based promoter, Barrington 'Bossie' Burton last summer. He still remains in police custody regarding murder and obstruction of justice related charges in relation to the murder of St. Catherine dancer, Clive 'Lizard' Williams.

Popcaan records with Snoop Dogg - Deejay to select one of three tracks for new album

Popcaan has been enjoying his stint in the front seat of dancehall music in recent months with severalpopular songs dominating the airwaves and earning 'pull ups' at events.
With upcoming shows in Suriname, Guyana, Bahamas, Europe and Guadeloupe among other local events, the young artiste who found his musical form under the wings of Vybz Kartel is now widening his stride, stepping out into the international dancehall market.
Hot off the heels of Popcaan's Only Man She Want remix with Busta Rhymes, he now has a soon-to-be finished song with American rapper Snoop Dogg which is to be featured on his new album.
The song was recorded during Snoop Dogg's recent visit to Jamaica.
He credits the collaboration to Carleene Samuels, a member of his management team, who was instrumental in securing studio time with the 'Doggystyle' rapper.
"Carleene Samuels (my management team) is good friends with the executive producer of the Snoop Dogg project so she approached them like two months ago. She made the link already so when they reach we went to the studio and just listen to nuff different tracks," Popcaan told The WEEKEND STAR.
He continued, "We meet and hol' a vibe and write few songs and then we lay down about three tracks, so the album production team will have some different vibes to work with, so we don't know which one will be final. So it's not like we have a song together already."
Popcaan enjoyed working with the American rapper and described their lyme as a cool, good experience saying, "Snoop was cool, and we chat and vibe. I introduced him to apple vodka and ting and he liked it so we just hol a vibe all night, was a ravin drink up link."
Popcaan, who contributes his current success in music to "hard work," says he plans to remain focused and not allow his success to get the better of him. He explained that although he admires several musicians he just plans to work with, "the ones that vibe with us."
When asked if there are any other international acts he would like to work with in the future he replied, "That's not something we really think about. We like nuff international acts and even dancehall artistes are international acts too 'cause our music play worldwide. We will just work with the ones that vibe with us and the ones that we like their music. But right now I'm looking forward to working with Jr Gong."
While in Jamaica, Snoop Dogg also worked with other local acts, among them, upcoming artiste Cutty Corn on a song he calls The Anthem.
"Is a song that I had long time but never release it yet. Him (Snoop Dogg) just hear it and like it suh I record my part and him a guh finish it up," said Cutty Corn.
He was also happy that he got the chance to work with th

Tragedy after triumph

HOURS after collecting an award on behalf of his father’s band, the legendary Skatalites, Okeene Brevett was shot dead in his home community of Seaview Gardens in St Andrew early Sunday morning.
Okeene had attended the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) Awards at Emancipation Park Saturday night because his father, Lloyd Brevett, is too old and frail.
The youngster was presented with the JaRIA Band award by former Skatalites manager and ex-Prime Minister P J Patterson in what was obviously a proud moment for both men, as the Skatalites are rated by many as the best musical aggregation to come out of Jamaica.
Police report that approximately 1:00 am, Brevett was walking in the community, close to his home, when he was pounced upon by armed thugs who shot him. He died on the spot.
A JaRIA official said he was told that Okeene had taken the award home, showed it to his father and other people in the community, then left his home to celebrate when the tragedy occurred.
Detectives from the St Andrew South police are still carrying out investigations.
Lloyd Brevett is a co-founder and former upright bass player of The Skatalites. The group, which was formed in 1964 with some of Jamaica’s top musicians at the time, has recorded over 20 albums and toured the world extensively.
Among their classic recordings are Guns Of Navarone, Confucius and Freedom Sounds. They also backed several top artistes of the day, including The Wailers on the 1964 hit song Simmer Down.
Of the nine original members of the group, only Brevett and Lester Sterling are still alive.
Saturday night’s JaRIA Awards celebrated excellence in Jamaican music. A report of the awards is published here: JaRIA lauds local greats.

'Spear' jabs at distributor

REGGAE great Burning Spear has launched a scathing assault on a major American reggae distributor, Ernie B's Reggae, claiming the company has shipped bootleg copies of his work.
In two Facebook posts in February, Spear alleged that "they bootlegging all of our music and trying to use the police to get us arrested. Time to unite, it's our music that feed them."

In a second post, dated February 13, Spear called for the California-based Ernie B's to be shut down.
According to the unitedreggae.com website, the singer plans to sue for royalties as part of a wider campaign that includes boycotting Ernie B's Reggae and RAS Records.
On another website www.clintonlindsay.com, Ernie B disputed Spear's allegations. He said during the 19 years he has conducted business with the Grammy winner, he has never seen an illegal copy of Spear's music pass through his warehouse.
"When determining the validity of the claims that Burning Spear music is making against us, it should be duly noted that those claims are being made against virtually every company that they have ever dealt with," Ernie B is quoted as saying. "We continue to hold a deep respect for Spear's legendary works and hope that they will decide to start".
Founded in 1993, Ernie B Reggae Distribution has become arguably the largest distributor of reggae. Many leading Jamaican artistes and producers have distribution deals with the company.
RAS Records, based in Washington DC, was a leading reggae label which at one stage had roots acts like Culture and Israel Vibration on its books.
Burning Spear (aka Winston Rodney) has always had distribution deals with independent companies, starting with Island Records in the 1970s. That company distributed some of his best albums, such as Marcus Garvey and Man In The Hills. Spear had a similar deal in the 1980s and 1990s with Heartbeat Records, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
He is just one of many Jamaican artistes who have had knotty issues over royalties with record companies.
